I know we’re well into October, but in New England the weather is only just starting to get nippy. I love when the air has a little bit of a snap to it, but it’s not so cold that you have to deal with frost in the morning. It’s the perfect in between weather and it’s great for light layers. So instead of breaking out the chunky knits, I’ve been throwing a denim jacket over my usual tee shirts and jeans.
And for the days when there’s a little more aggressive dip in temperature, I’ve been throwing this massive Burberry scarf over everything else. I bought it in the spring on super sale (similar here), like I usually do with anything that comes with a “luxury” price tag, and have been patiently waiting to break it out ever since. It was more money than I would normally ever care to spend on a scarf, but the Lenny Kravitz-esque size and the stripes reminiscent of Tom Baker’s Dr. Who called out to me in a way I rarely experience with clothing any more.
When this happens, I normally torture myself by not allowing the purchase in the name of responsibility and savings. While these things are important, lately I have also been trying to balance them with allowing myself to have the things I want; the things that “bring me joy”, if you will. Not all the time, but some of the time. Otherwise I find myself in a depressive funk that ends up being released through impulse purchases of things I don’t actually need or never end up using. It’s a tricky balance to strike, but I think I’m starting to get the hang of it.
Besides, with a piece so statement, you really only need jeans, a Hanes tee, Converse or moccasins, and, if the weather calls for it, a Levi’s denim jacket. This outfit is a great example of the high/low simple/statement mix that really encapsulates my style. Which means I’ll definitely be getting my money’s worth out of the scarf.
Now I just need to find a Winter coat that looks like Dr. Who’s.
